Item Description
This ring is similar to the 1937 Post’s premium ring offered by both Frank Hawks and Melvin Purvis (see previous item). This example is a distinct variety from 2 standpoints. First and most obvious is that the ring is 100% finished in brass with no green enamel paint on the scarab. The fact that this is a distinct variety as opposed to merely a scarab minus its paint, is proven by the fact that the coiled cobras forming the band on the green version of the ring have scales over their entire bodies from tail to tip of their head. On the version being offered here, the tiny marks indicating their scales stop where each snake’s body forms a small vertical oval below the area where their necks crisscross. In other words, only about two-thirds of the snakes’ lower bodies show scaling whereas the upper third is smooth. This example does appear to have once had silver flashing at least on the cobra bands and the scarab itself may once have had silver flashing as there is flashing on the underside of the metal and microscopically just a trace remaining within the accent lines of the scarab’s body. A significant variety and previously unknown, to us.
