Item Description
6x9” double-sided handbill for Apr. 30, 1937 performance by Chic Webb and his N.B.C. Orchestra and his featured vocalist Ella Fitzgerald at the Alcazar Ballroom in Baltimore, MD. Webb’s increasing popularity allowed him to leave his home base of the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem to perform at the first annual “Swing Cotillion” presented by the Pi Xi Chi Fraternity. Caricatured image of Webb drumming with musical notes in bkg. Back of handbill has “An Open Letter To Dance Lovers Of The City” touting Webb’s popularity, noting that his orchestra is “One Of The Few Bands That Combine Hot Stomp Music With Sweet Melodies…In Short A Band That You Will Enjoy, No Matter What Your Preference In Dance Music Is.” Caricature image is repeated from front, though smaller. Regarded as one of the best bandleaders and drummers of the “Swing Movement,” Webb is often noted for giving Ella Fitzgerald her start as a young vocalist in 1935. It should be noted that Webb died at the young age of 34, 2 years after this appearance. Lt. handling wear but VF/Exc. Rare.
