Item Description
c. 1900s. 1.75x4.75x2.75" tall overall w/nicely detailed image of mourning lion on top of shield w/weapons below. Bottom of front has text in Latin which translates to "To the Loyalty and Courage of the Swiss". Figure is based on 1792 event when 900 Swiss guard mercenaries were guarding King Louis XVI at Tuileries Palace in Paris and became surrounded by an angry mob of some 30,000 French Revolutionaries. More than 700 of the guards lost their lives in the battle that followed. Scattered wear to plating, most noticeable on right side, back and underside. Fine. Wonderful detail.
