Item Description
12-5/8x16.75" print by James Baillie of New York from 1848 titled "The Fox Hunt." Bottom margin has two small pieces missing, one w/reverse clear tape repair to 1" vertical tear through word "Fox." The other at bottom right has 2" of tape on each side. Margins have five minor .75" tears, background has a few widely scattered tan marks. Overall VG. Cartoon portrays Van Buren the third party Free Soil Candidate as a Fox being pursued by incumbent president "Poke" (Polk) as a crane and Whig candidate Taylor as an alligator saying "I'll Swallow Him Directly." The fleeing Van Buren's caption reads "It's Of No Use, Friends, My Cake Is All Dough, As My Face Used To Be. Why Did You Drag Me Out Of My Hole To Be Tormented Thus." Around him are Greeley saying "Run Under My White Coat Matty. It Will Not Be The First Time That It Has Covered A Fox. But, Cheer Up, For There Is Still Balm In Gilead. You Shall Be The Candidate Of The Fourierites." Next is anti slavery activist Abby Folsom (here "Abby Fulsome") saying "Now That He Has Doubled On His Track & Come Over To Us, What A Pity That We Can't Save Him!" Next is "B.F. Butler" saying "Alas! Alas! This Is The End Of All My Devotedness, My Martyrdom, & Above All, My Stated Preaching?" To the right is Calhoun as lion, Thomas Hart Benton as a bull and Webster as an elephant with caption below "Let Me Put My Foot On Him." A rare cartoon filled w/major political figures of the 1848 campaign. Morry Greener Collection.
