Item Description
Harper's pictorial history of the Civil War was published in two large volumes in 1866-1886 by M C Donnell Bros. of Chicago. It has 836 pages profusely illustrated w/wood cuts and maps. A highlight is the pair of double page spreads in color. These pages were long ago removed from the book and carefully joined by affixing to a .75" wide by 21.75" reverse page strip, reverse has 4 other very short reinforcing strips on the margins of the illustrations that appear on the map's reverse. While the joining of the large pair of sheets is obvious on the reverse, from the front the item appears as a single large poster style map. The title's subtitle is "Including Railroads, County Towns, State Capitols, County Roads, The Southern Coast Of Delaware To Texas, Showing The Harbors, Inlets, Forts And Positions Of Blockading Ships." Depicted at the four corners are Lincoln, Seward, Scott and McClellan. The map carries date of "December, 1863" but actually printed a few years later. Slight rounding of two lower corners. Just a couple .5" to 1" margin tears. Extremely clean. A wonderful vintage map depicting the states of the Confederacy.
