Item Description
We've seen a larger size but otherwise identical bear marked "Berne" on reverse, but this is not marked by town name. The city since the early 1800s was a center of wood carving done by families for sales to tourists during the summer season in the Alps. This example stands 8.5" tall. Arms extend to 7" wide. Reverse arms and legs are joined by small screws plus a brown cord which is pulled to make bear's arms and legs move up and down. The reverse has had a screw eye added at top so the bear can be suspended by a hook. Bear has small black glass eyes with black accents on nose and claws and red accent on mouth and tongue. There is tiny flake off just one of the approximate 26 individually carved teeth plus tiny flake off front edge of the right nostril. Great detail and great mechanical action.
