Item Description
Label on interior of hinged lid shows polar bear and small vignettes that include ship, ice, igloos and Eskimos. Box was made shortly after TR's death in 1919 and seems to imply the Polar is replacing the teddy bear. The box is 6.5x7.5x3.25" deep. Of the Boite Nature style with a ball and pivot clasp, two hinges, all wood with interlocking corners and inside collar made by William C. Smith of Windsor, PA. Front panel has tax class rectangle with price of five cents making it post 1919. Exterior has brand name and impressed image of bear on lid and bear on left and right sides. Wood has darkened some and about a 6 or 7 on cigar box scale of 10. Interior label is a 9 and includes embossed gold icicles. A relatively scarce box.
