Item Description
This is a superb quality and finely detailed black and white photograph. The photo has a blind stamp marking of the Harris and Ewing Company at the left corner at the foot of the Judge. Harris and Ewing are well-known for their photographs of famous political and government figures. All of the nine judges have signed the photo in ink. Due to the combination of judges present in the photo we have determined that this photo was taken at the earliest date of 2 June 1930 and at the latest date of 12 January 1932. Included in the photo are all nine judges which we will list. We have not listed them in the order that they appear in the photo. We have listed them in the order in which we did research. 1. J.C. McReynolds (James C.) was born in 1862 and died in 1946. He served as General Justice from 1914-1941. 2. George Sutherland was born in 1862 and died in 1942. He was Justice from 1922-1938. Sutherland was British born and he opposed FDR. 3. Willis Van Devanter was born in 1859 and died in 1941. He was a Justice from 1910-1937. 4. Louis Dembitz Brandeis was born in 1856 and died in 1941. Brandeis was the first Jewish Supreme Court Judge. He was an Associate Justice. He served on the Court from 5 June 1916 to 13 February 1939. Brandeis graduated from Harvard Law School at the age of 20. He has the highest grade average in the history of the college. He was important in helping develop the "right to privacy concept". He was a militant crusader for social justice. His case opinions were superb defenses of "right to privacy" and "freedom of speech" issues. 5. Harlen F. Stone was born in 1872 and died in 1946. He served on the Court from 2 March 1928 to 22 April 1946. He was an Associate Justice in 1925 and became a Chief Justice in 1941. 6. Oliver Wendell Holmes. Was born in 1841 and died in 1935. He served as an Associate Justice from 1902-1932. 7. Charles Evan Hughes was born in 1862 and died in 1948. He served as Associate justice from 1910-1916. He also served as Chief Justice from 1930-1941. Hughes ran for US President on the Republican ticket in 1916. 8. Pierce Butler was born in 1866 and died in 1939. He served as Associate Justice from 1923-1939. 9. Owen Roberts was born in 1875 and died in 1955. He served on the Court from 1930-1945. There are some noticeable age tone lines and spots on the border caused by the original cardboard backing. Otherwise, the photo looks very fresh and has superb contrast. The original autographs are of various levels of darkness having been signed with various pens. The photo as well as the autographs are in very appealing, fresh, sound condition. The photo still remains in it's original frame. The photo appears to have never been taken out of the frame. The majority of the original back paper is present. The nails appear to be in place from when the photo was originally framed. The center of the back paper retains the original framers label of "Fred C. Hays & Co. 1523 I Street, N.W. Washington, D.C." The frame measures 12-1/8x17.25". The approximate size of the photo including the border is 11.5x16.5". The size of the black and white image is 8.5x12-7/8". Comes with Hake's COA. We've seen similar photos online with prices from $7,000 to $12,000. A rarity with a conservative opening bid of $2,000.
