Item Description
This is an outstanding assemblage with handsome high quality framing. Overall size is 15.25x18.5". Howe printed image is 4.5x5". Howe signed letter is 6.75x10.25". FDR response card with facsimile signature is 4.5x5.25". Stationery is printed at top "Franklin D. Roosevelt/Hyde Park, Duchess County/New York." Typed letter is dated "January 20, 1933." Addressed to Gardena, California man. Text reads "My Dear Mr. Taylor: Mr. Roosevelt has asked me to thank you for sending him your verse, 'I Was Blue, But I Ain't Now'. He was amused to see this and has placed it in his scrapbook. Your word of congratulation pleased him very much and he desires to extend to you every good wish for the new year. Very Sincerely Yours, Louis M. H. Howe (signed in ink) Secretary to Mr. Roosevelt." Two faint original fold lines. The FDR card reads "It is my desire that my mail be answered with the greatest possible promptitude. The many thousands of letters which have been received since the election and the hundreds which come in everyday have made it impossible for me personally to dictate and sign replies. I have however asked my secretary to answer your letter, and I trust that you will understand. Very Sincerely Yours, Franklin D. Roosevelt (facsimile signature). The date is interesting by itself. In 1933, and since 1793, the inauguration was held March 4. However three days after this letter was typed, the 20th Amendment was ratified changing the inauguration date from 1937 onward to noon January 20, the very date of this 1933 letter. All displays Mint. Reverse has typed sticker reading in full "Louis McHenry Howe was adviser, speech writer, and confidant (as well as a personal secretary from time to time) to FDR from the early years of Roosevelt's political career. Howe never doubted that some day, Franklin Roosevelt would be President of the United States. Framed Oct/86 by Ann Tedford, as a birthday gift to Tom Tedford on his 56th birthday." Item is actually from the Mark Furr Collection as are most other FDR items in this auction. Comes with Hake's COA. Unique.
