Item Description
5.25X7.5". Two sided. Text starts "I'm in favor of anything the Devil is against, and I am against everything the Devil is in favor of/I want you to understand that I am not standing for votes for women because it's popular./I stood for votes for women when it wasn't as popular as it is today, and I am standing for it now." This flier was issued prior to the first showdown on Woman Suffrage in New Jersey on Oct. 19, 1915. A referendum went on the ballot asking voters (men voters only) whether women should share in the franchise. the election has special importance because no eastern state has ever before adopted Woman Suffrage, although several western states had long ago enacted equal rights at the ballot box. The Suffragists may have thought they has justice on their side, but the anti-suffragists had the power. They argued that women voting would crack down on the liquor trade. The measure lost 58% to 42%. Some women fought against suffrage as well. Essentially Mint.
