Item Description
Two items. c. late 1890s. Glass decanter is 5.25" dia. 11.75" tall overall showing Dewey, Hobson and Schley etched on body of decanter. Each has text underneath. Dewey text reads "The Hero Of Manila", Lieutenant Hobson text reads "The Hero Of The Merrimac June 1898", and text under Commodore Schley reads "Our Hero Of Santiago Bay May 3 1898". Bowl shows some light white residue on inside which could be removed with knowledgeable cleaning. Faceted stopper has .25" chip at base which doesn't show when placed on top. Decanter is overall Fine. China Naval Lieutenant's hat is 1" tall and 3-3/8" long with gold accent color on front including American eagle with rwb shield in center. Inside of hat has relief image of Lt. Hobson which is also hold to light lithopane image. Has a few crow's foot hairlines that intersect at center of Hobson's face but not very visible when viewing lithopane. Fine/VF. Both are nicely designed. Hobson served with Admiral Sampson and sunk the ship Merrimac in an attempt to blockade the Spanish ships in the harbor at Santiago, Cuba. Hobson and his crew were picked up by the Spanish and he became a favorite of the American Press while he was held as a prisoner of war in Cuba. Following his release he dined with President McKinley and then traveled west by train giving speeches along the way to San Fransisco and the Philippines. His good looks and noted enthusiasm for kissing admiring young women made him a sex symbol of the Victorian Age.
