Item Description
Both are c. late 1890s. 3.5" dia. 5.5" tall overall. Dewey mug has text "Battle Of Manila, May 1 1898 Admiral George Dewey" with art image of him in center with pair of American flags on each side and portion of steaming ship in background. Made in Germany with Villeroy & Boch Mettlach stamp on underside along with several sets of numerals. Rear of mug near handle has small incised number "4/10 L". Pewter lid has thumb handle at top. Inside of mug has 5" hairline crack going toward the bottom and a 1/8x.75" chip which results in a 1/8x.5" area of rim missing. Hairline also visible running down back of mug along handle. Does not affect colorful image on front. No defect is visible when displayed from front. VF appearance. 4" dia. 8" tall overall Sampson mug is glazed polychrome with pewter lid. Has scrolled thumb lift. Stamped on underside Germany 1022. Great relief image of Sampson with text "Admiral Wm. T. Sampson, U.S.N.", known for his victory in the Battle of Santiago. Mug has beautiful Nouveau detailing around sides. Exc. appearance.
