Item Description
Both are 1930s. 7x9" glossy news service photo dated May 10, 1937 on reverse shows smiling Alice Marble holding three tennis rackets with paper caption of reverse noting she is going to compete in the City Of London championship prior to the opening of Wimbledon. Reverse side has NEA ink stamp. Photo has a few photographer's black crop marks for printing purposes, otherwise Fine. Marble won the singles at Wimbledon in 1939 and the singles in the US Open from 1936-1940 and also won doubles at Wimbledon in 1938 and '39 and doubles in the US Open in 1937-1940. Betty Nuthall real photo postcard is 3-3/8x5.25" showing her smiling in tennis outfit holding two rackets with photographer stamp at lower right "Published By E. Trim & Co. Wimbledon". c. 1930. Unused and Exc. with superb image. Betty Nuthall, also known as Betty May Nuthall Shoemaker won a woman's single title at the US Championships in 1930, the first non-American to do so since 1892. She was the last British female player to win the title until 1968. Nuthall won women's doubles titles at the US Championships in 1930, '31 and '33 and at the 1931 French Championship. Wonderful pair for the tennis historian. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
