Item Description
11.75x17 7/8" sheet of drawing paper has 10.5x12" image area with lead pencil preliminary drawing of smiling Superboy standing at right lifting up car as man looks on. Top portion has been boxed out for logo. Art is nicely signed at lower left with “Joe Shuster” lead pencil signature. Reverse side has 8.5x8.5" area at top with two figures lightly penciled in. Center of image area has barely noticeable pair of two inch tears neatly repaired on reverse with clear tape. Image area will mat and frame to Fine appearance. Superboy first appeared in More Fun #101 in 1944 with a 1945 cover date. This art was done for the cover of “Adventure Comics” #103 from April 1946, his first appearance after moving over from “More Fun Comics” #107 according to the Overstreet Comic Price Guide. Just the 4th Superboy cover ever published and in our opinion the best. Superboy was the subject of a legal battle between Time Warner, the owner of DC Comics and Jerry Siegel. After returning from World War II Siegel found that DC had published a Superboy story which bore similarities to his proposal. In 1975 Siegel and Shuster launched a public relations campaign to protest DC’s treatment and Warner Communications awarded Siegel and Shuster $20,000 each per year for the rest of their lives and guaranteed that comics, movies, TV shows and video games with Superman would be required to credit Superman was “Created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster”. An incredibly historic piece of original art and quite possibly the last Superboy image Joe Shuster drew while employed by DC Comics in the Golden Age. Will mat and frame to VF appearance. A classic.
