Item Description
1.25" with W&H back paper reads "McKinley/Tuskegee, Ala., December 16, 1898." The button's surface, only in reflected light, shows about 20 tiny and shallow marks, most no bigger than a dot. Viewed normally these are not at all visible and the surface retains its full gloss plus perfect centering and with mint W&H back paper. This is an important historical button which pre-dates Theodore Roosevelt's famous White House dinner with Booker T. Washington by almost three full years. On December 16, 1898 McKinley's train arrived from Atlanta at 8:00am. He was greeted by a parade of 1100 students and 50 floats representing the school's various educational departments. The main party then went to the chapel where 3000 students sang. Booker T. Washington introduced Governor Johnson who in turn introduced McKinley. In his address to the body, McKinley applauded the school, its goals, accomplishments and gave a special tribute to Booker T. Washington. At 1:00pm the party departed for Montgomery. The following day the New York Times headline read "Mr. McKinley At Tuskegee/Visits The Educational Institution For Colored People Under Booker T. Washington's Direction." The only example we know of and while overall VF still displaying essentially Mint. Morry Greener Collection.
