Item Description
In researching this remarkable button, we discovered a small version only 1.25x1-5/8" in an Anderson auction ending 11/11/08. Their text noted: "This Is The First Time We Recall Offering This Pin." It realized $4840.00. This is the first example we've seen as well but this example is a sepia real photo celluloid 2-7/16" wide by 3.25" tall with the original wire easel on the reverse so it would stand upright as an ornament. Interestingly, the left rim text on the small version reads "PAT. APPLIED FOR." On this large example, the left rim was printed blank under the celluloid; however in 1908 apparently the designer, whose name appears on the right as "1908/F.L. Bigler," hand inked in white "PAT. PEND." and then covered the ink with a thin layer of transparent glue over the 1/8" wide by 1" tall lettering. The second two letters of "PAT" are faint but all else is easily read. Additional text on the front rims reads "'A Square Deal' '1908' Making Good'"/Roosevelt Second Term League/By The Votes Of The People." On the reverse curl enough letters show next to the metal back to read "Mfg. Co. Chicago" and three partial letters imply the name "Cruver." Other than the designer added glue, only minimally visible in reflected light, the condition is as outstanding as is the item's rarity. N. Mint, displaying Mint.
