Item Description
1.25" pictures marine "Corp. Daniel A. Haggerty." No backpaper likely as made but with spring pin holding original 2.5" ribbon. American soldiers were killed at a battle in Vera Cruz, Mexico in June 1914. Haggerty was the first of 17 seamen and marines who were killed and then conveyed by the battleship Montana to New York where there was a day-long national tribute along with their memorial services at the Brooklyn Navy Yard where President Wilson spoke after which the bodies were shipped to relatives across the United States. The button's celluloid surface has about ten vertical craze lines but very subtle and showing just the slightest bit in reflected light. The celluloid has not lifted up and the surface remains quite smooth to the touch. There is no trace of stain and the button retains its full gloss. While we've seen other buttons for casualties of this 1914 event this is the first we've seen for Corp. Haggerty. Rare.
