Item Description
This historic and rare 7/8" button includes W&H paper with design used only during the first year of button making in 1896. The button is listed as Hake Third Party #2150. In 1896, Debs was a hopeful presidential candidate for nomination by the National Peoples Party, more commonly known as the Populist Party. Their first nominee in 1892 was James B. Weaver. This button would have been made before the Populist convention July 24-26, 1896 in St. Louis, as the convention ended up endorsing the Democratic nominee Bryan (who favored many Populist ideas) and their own Thomas Watson for V.P. On the button's reverse, as made, three tiny fragments failed to fold under the collet but overall N. Mint as made displaying Mint. The 1st Debs button and rare.
