Item Description
1.5" reads "Remember/Ruchell/Magee/And All Other Black Political Prisoners." Two pinpoint white rub marks at lower left but rest is N. Mint. Button relates to August, 1970 episode. Prisoner Magee was a witness in a trial of a man accused of assaulting a San Quentin guard. In the midst of his testimony, Jonathan Jackson a 17 year old heavily armed black man burst into the courtroom. He tossed out weapons to the inmates waiting to testify and Magee joined the rebellion. While the escapees did not harm the hostages, as they fled in a van, prison guards and sheriffs opened fire killing four. The event became known as The August 7th Rebellion and Magee, although wounded, was the sole black survivor. He was charged with many offenses as was activist Angela Davis who was accused of planning the escape. Their trials were eventually severed and Davis received international support (see item #494) with her eventual acquittal in 1972 while Magee remained in prison. Rare.
