Item Description
Brass 1-11/16" by 2.5" with name of maker W&H on bottom edge. Front shows female figure standing on a base which seems to be comprised of flames overprinted by a circle enclosing a railroad safety lantern all printed over a coiled serpent. Text at center reads "Now Let Us Conserve Human Life" and text around the lantern reads "American Museum Of Safety." Text on the back of the piece reads "First International Exposition Of Safety And Sanitation/New York City/1913/Commemorative Medal" with engraved inscription on a rectangular area below "Presented To Joint Board Of Sanitary Control." Brass luster on each side is lightly worn but no significant damage. We found a reference to this on the Internet and will send it along with the item. It reports that the exposition featured 300 exhibits from 24 Museums of Safety around the world. On opening day the event was visited by Vincent Astor, Mrs. August Belmont, and other dignitaries of the Committee on Awards with the article stating "Medals are to be awarded this evening at the dinner...at the Waldorf-Astoria." Most likely this medal was presented that night. Only example we've seen.
