Item Description
We've never had a ribbon badge like this nor the following item. The celluloid badge in a tin rim is 1.75" bearing rider number "1144." Back of the piece has tin reverse with horizontal bar pin and name of maker W&H. Also on the reverse at the bottom of the 6" ribbon is a large 2x2" glued on piece of cardboard with the top section above a perforated line reading "Return This Coupon To Howard C Ruch, 165 W. 29th Street, For Survivor's Medal." Beneath the perforated line is the maker's name again W&H. The ribbon's front reads top to bottom "Spring/Century Run/Of The/N.Y. Firemen's/Cycle Club,/To Oakdale, Long Island And Return./ May 8th, 1898." The ribbon then has a pair of horizontal lines and below this under a title "Fast Division" are a list of the towns on the route of the ride with the left column designating the number of miles going from 0 to 100. Next column to the right shows the time to arrive in each town and the final column on the right shows the time to leave each town. The ride began at the 23rd St. Ferry, N.Y. Side At 7:15 in the morning and then proceeded to Bedford Ave. Fountain/Valley Stream/Seaford/Bayshore/Oakdale/Babylon/Valley Stream/and concluding at 5:30 P.M. back at the Bedford Ave. Fountain. Below this is the inscription "Bring Your Lamp." Below this are two horizontal rows of numbers with the top row being all zeros and the bottom row being numbers one through ten. We're not sure what these numbers designated. See following related item. N. Mint and Rare.
