Item Description
We've seen only one or two buttons picturing Mark Twain and these are the only pre-1900 pieces we have seen that relate to him. Each is a 2-1/8" double sided celluloid with a slot at the top where a fabric ribbon would have been tied, perhaps with a pin so it could be worn. The first piece with his portrait and name reads on the front "Souvenir Hannibal Street Fair, October 12-15, 1898." The reverse seen on this one is "Mark Twain's Boyhood Home/Hannibal, Mo." Two figures which seem to be small children are in the foreground of the photo. This button has small and light gray age marks on the extreme rim edge but only one or two tiny dots going inward more than 3/16". On the side picturing his home there are four gray 1/16" dots on the background. Second piece on the front reads "Entrance To Hannibal Cave." This shows a park-like setting with a woman pushing a child on a swing while additional people are in the background and at center background is what appears to be an iron gate over an entrance to the cave. On the reverse side there is a photographic street scene with many buildings and with the street filled with people. Text reads "Souvenir Hannibal Street Fair Oct. 3-7, 1899." This piece has only the slightest trace of wear and is Exc., displaying Mint. Each piece on the side edge has name of maker W&H. Twain is currently enjoying great popularity as the first of three volumes titled "Autobiography Of Mark Twain" has just been released this year, 100 years after his death. These celluloids each made for only a four day event in what was a small town in 1898 and 1899 are extremely rare. See following more modern Twain item.
