Item Description
This piece of original art by the creator and lifelong artist of Peanuts, Charles Schulz, is from very early days of the strip's 50-year run. While the daily strip had been in papers since Oct. 2, 1950, the Peanuts Sunday strip did not appear until Jan. 1952. This Sunday is a well done example that features early evidence of Charlie Brown's "angst" as well as two relatively scarce characters, Patty and Violet. The girls are laughing and the insecure Charlie Brown thinks they are laughing at him. Charlie Brown is in 10 panels and the girls are featured in eight. The strip contains the classic Peanuts catch-phrase "Good Grief!" in the eighth panel. The Peanuts logo is a standard photostat by the artist's hand in a 1x3" area. It had been whited out so the strip could be reprinted in the 1956 Sunday page reprint book published by Rinehart & Co. "Good Grief, More Peanuts." This area is lightly tanned. There is no paper denoting the "United Features Syndicate" copyright but the back has a purple ink date stamp reading "Color Engraving 1955 Sep 20 PM 12 24." This is applied to each strip of the time for printing purposes. The back side also has two stamps from an Ohio art dealer. They do not show on the front. The back also has the following written in pencil "Pub. Oct. 23, 1955." There is a trace of lt. foxing in a 2" area of the first panel and also in a 1" area of the upper left area of panel five. Panel ten has a .25x2" lt. black ink smudge in the date area and also Charlie Brown's right foot. The piece measures 17x23.5" and is on thin art board. The board is Bristol and probably provided to Schulz by the Syndicate. The image area is 15.25x22-5/8". The strip has traces of very lt. dust soil but very clean overall. It is in VF+ condition and perfect for framing.
