Item Description
While Johnny Thunder may grace the dramatic cover, the historical importance of this book lies in the fact that it contains the last of Green Lantern, Black Pirate and Dr. Mid-Nite’s solo appearances as regular features in any Golden Age comic. This is also the last issue of one of the cornerstone books in the history of DC. The title was the beginning of what would quickly become known as the All-American Group. While technically separate from DC proper, they shared printing, distribution and in house advertising. In 1939, Charlie Gaines went into partnership with Harry Donenfeld and Jack Liebowitz to publish two comic books, Movie Comics and this one, All-American Comics. Gaines had a lot of experience with reprint books. In 1934, he had put a 10-cent sticker on promotional copies of Famous Funnies and dropped them off at a newsstand to see how they would do; they sold out. He had also put together Popular Comics for Dell in 1936. When he decided to create his own company, it was only natural that he focused on the reprints that first appeared in the first issues of this title. It was the sixteenth issue that changed everything. It introduced the Green Lantern. He held the cover until issue #100 when he was replaced by western themes. The title was changed to All-American Western for the next issue. It was canceled with issue #126 in 1952. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC certified 8.0 (VF). The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide #34 lists this book as scarce.
