Item Description
19.5x30" linen mounted poster issued by Parson Davies Champion Specialty Company has text at bottom including "The Strangler Champion Catch As Catch Can Wrestler Of The World". Printed by the Chicago Bank Note Company #43. Evan Lewis (1860-1919) was an American professional wrestler who was the first recognized American Heavyweight Champion and is credited with perfecting the strangle hold. Lewis won the American Catch-As-Catch-Can Championship on Mar. 14, 1887 and unified the title on Mar. 3, 1893. Lewis is considered one of the fathers of American professional wrestling. Poster is c. 1890. Margins have trace of lt. dust soil but poster is linen mounted to Exc. appearance.
