Item Description
The Sunny Jim character on boxes of Force cereal was created in the United States in 1902 by writer Minnie Maud Hanff and artist Dorothy Ficken, initially for an advertising campaign for this early food product, and it was well received by the public. Six items. Sheet music is 10.75x13.75" copyright 1902 H.N. White Cleveland, O. Nice art on front cover with Sunny Jim walking and dog sitting on "Rag Time Finish" sheet music. Some lt. dust soil with a few handling creases and faint moisture marks around blank margins. Fine. Small booklet is 2.25x3.5" with 24 pages titled "The Story Of Sunny Jim" c. early 1900s with text promoting "Force" cereal. Larger booklet is 5x8" copyright 1910 by the H-O Company with 36 pages titled "Through Foreign Lands With Sunny Jim" with wonderful illustrations by Wizard of Oz artist W.W. Denslow. Story is told in prose format and promotes "Force" cereal. Covers have some dust soil and spine has 2" split, back cover is missing a few pieces at lower right corner in 2" area. Overall covers VG. Content Fine. Button is 1.25" with nice art of Sunny Jim running with text "Be A Regular Fellow Eat Sunny Jim Brand - Dandies". c. early 1900s. Button is flattened with cracks and stains. Just Good. Postcard is 3.25x5.25" c. early 1900s with nice art on front of Jim jumping over fence with text "Be Sunny" and poem at lower left "The Children Cry Oh Look At Him! Such Vigor Proves He's Sunny Jim". Issued by Force cereal. Address side has been filled out in ink but postcard is postally unused. Trace of light dust soil and tiny bit of corner tip wear. Fine. Cereal box is 2-5/8x6.75x8.75" tall c. mid 1930s with nice art on front of Jim walking with cane. Reverse side has "Bobby Benson's Adventures" 12-panel comic strip featuring characters from a radio show sponsored by Force cereal titled "Mexicans Are Real Folks" with Tex telling Bobby the good qualities of Mexicans and how they should be treated with respect. Empty box is a bit pushed in on front and back with lt. creases at corners as well as a few small tears along seams. Near Fine appearance. All items have nice graphics. An instant collection.
