Item Description
These four pieces are among the earliest items from the collection of journalist Harry McLaughlin. Three pieces are from 1937 when Eleanor came to York, PA for a lecture at Harry’s school William Penn Senior High under auspices of the College Club of York. First is 4.75x6" printed photo with her clear but slightly faded autograph below “Eleanor Roosevelt.” This has .5 and 1" edge tears and 1.5" crease line to left and right of her head. Reverse has some tape and paper residue. With this is the same photo appearing on a 6.5x8.5" press clipping about the event. Next is 2.75x4.25" photo with reverse pencil notation “Harry McLaughlin & Mrs. Roosevelt.” This has crease at lower left plus moderate soiling on reverse. Last is 6.25x9.25" “The White House Washington” stationery dated July 15, 1942 and signed by “Stephen Early/Secretary To The President.” The letter to Harry McLaughlin tells him with proper York Dispatch newspaper credentials, he will be admitted as a visitor to one of FDR’s twice weekly press conferences. Tiny age traces and two folds as mailed. The Eleanor autograph is rather early compared to most which are typically from the 1940s-1950s. From the collection of newspaper editor Harry Mclaughlin and comes with Hake’s COA.
