Item numbers 1 through 1428 in auction 203
Item Description
All are c. 1920s in vintage wood frames ranging in size from 9x20.5" to 9x33.25". Largest two photos both show airship "Shenandoah" and both have photographer's name "Clements". Smaller photo shows interior of hanger with "Los Angeles" airship inside along with three other smaller airships. One Shenandoah photo shows it entering hangar and the other shows it crashed on the ground with bystanders around it with copyright date of 1925. The Shenandoah was caught in a violent thunderstorm updraft on September 2, 1925 and crashed with the loss of the lives of 14 officers and crew members. Hangar photo has a bit of show through at right side from original corrugated cardboard backing. Los Angeles photo has some yellowing of emulsion from age and a few lt. creases visible in reflected light. Overall group is Fine/VF. The USS Shenandoah was the first American-built rigid airship christened on August 20, 1923 while the Los Angeles was under construction. The Los Angeles flew successfully for eight years. Sharp, clear images. Historic.
