Item Description
On his oversized personal 8.5x14" “News Release” stationery dated August 1, 1972 is the full printed text of his letter of resignation addressed to Gene Westwood, Chairman Democratic National Committee. The final two paragraphs (followed by his name and his office title United States Senator) read: “My Candidacy, However, Has Apparently Caused Deep Divisions Within The Democratic Party, Which Already Has Too Many Divisions. My Personal Feelings Are Secondary To The Necessity To Unify The Democratic Party And Elect George McGovern President Of The United States. I Support George McGovern And I’m Going To Continue Working To See Him Elected President Of The United States. I Therefore Resign As Vice Presidential Candidate On the 1972 Democratic Ticket.” Next to his printed name he has signed in black ink "Tom Eagleton/USS.‘72" plus an underscore. To the lower left is the additional black ink signature of “George McGovern.” Paper has three faint original folds, very faint age tone, three tiny nicks bottom left edge and below Eagleton’s signature a pinhole and hairline 2" diameter rust line where a button was once pinned. Blank bottom area of paper has three additional pinholes that show very little. Overall near VF condition. Signed in person by both men for a personal friend and long time Democratic Party activist. Comes with Hake’s COA.
