Item Description
6" long. High quality and beautifully executed silver-plated spoon memorializing the famed black abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Douglass, 1818-1895, was born into slavery but later escaped to the north in 1838. This spoon, with fine detailing, looks to be silver-plated and features a large image of Douglass and chain link design up the stem listing all his achievements. The stem reads as follows “Escaped From Slavery 1838/Nantucket Mass. 1841/ 54TH–5 Mass. Regiment 1863/Elector At Large 1872/U. S. Marshall D. C. 1877/U. S. Minister To Hayti 1889/Died Washington 1895.” The earliest “1838" link is actually designed as a slave’s ankle shackle while the last “1894" link is designed with a small missing piece to denote the broken shackle upon his death. His portrait on the bowl is captioned “Born 1817 Maryland” and the reverse stem features chain links around floral patterns with “Frederick Douglass” at the end. EXC. condition. An outstanding Douglass piece.
