Item Description
In addition to the American and Confederate flags, the Christian flag has long been used as part of the Klan's symbology. The Christian flag is composed of a red cross on a blue upper left panel with the remaining field in white. On this Klan version the red cross is on a white panel with the remaining field in blue surrounding the slogan “By This Sign Conquer.” This flag was obtained from the family of a Reading, PA man who was a Klan member in the 1920s and who carried the flag in Klan parades in Reading and Ephrata, Pa. as well as Washington D. C. The flag consists of .5" diameter pole 4' 8" long. The fabric is inserted in a near hairline slot in the wood and additionally anchored by four tiny nails in the pole. The fabric is 26.5" wide x 42" long of what seems to be loosely woven starched cotton. White areas show tanning and right half is darker tone than left half. The only significant fabric loss is a small triangular piece off the bottom edge about 1.75" long and at most 1" deep. Much less noticeable are tiny dots of fabric loss from the letters “ER” of “Conquer.” The letters “ER” remain about 98% intact. The far right fabric, to a depth of about 6", has been creased, a few fabric specks missing and about 10 hairline splits ranging from 1" to 4" have been professionally mended. While the thin fabric is obviously fragile, with these repairs to most of the small splits, the flag is now structurally very sound. Overall condition ranges from VG to Fine. The only example of a parade carried Ku Klux Klan flag known to us. See additional Klan items in the section of smaller items. Rare.
