Item numbers 1 through 1428 in auction 203
Item Description
Each 17x22". The arrest, release and then disappearance of three civil rights workers near Meridian, Mississippi made national headlines the summer of 1964. Chaney and Schwerner began work in January 1964 to establish a Congress of Racial Equality field office. Goodman began work the day before his murder. On August 4, 1964, their bodies were discovered in Neshoba County, Mississippi. The famous artist and political activist Ben Shahn was outraged and created these three images based on the photos of three on the “Missing” poster circulated by the FBI during their search for the abducted men. These posters were produced two ways. There is a numbered edition of 300 signed by Shahn in red crayon. This set is from the unnumbered edition but Shahn did sign the plate that produced these screen prints on Japan paper and his name appears at lower right of each image on the print. The prints were published to benefit the Lawyers’ Constitutional Defense Committe of the American Civil Liberties Union of New York. The signed and numbered prints are now typically priced from $500-$1,000 each. This unsigned set is also quite scarce but more affordable. Each poster was once framed and there is a thin tan line from a mat .25" to 1" inward from the outer edge. The paper has tanned slightly over the years with a small amount random pinpoint, or larger, but diffused spotting that detracts very little. The bottom margin of each has a line of pencil notations related to the original framing and both that and the mat line can easily be covered if reframed. The reverse top edge of each has a thin dry line of masking tape or residue but only about .5" deep and each lower corner has 1" strip of dry tape residue. The only very small damage areas are a few small chips off top edge Chaney-a top left 2" horizontal tear .5" below upper edge of Goodman and a .5x1.5" piece off extreme top edge of Schwerner. Framed, these will display extremely Fine with only small traces of age tone. An historic set of prints produced during the violent resistence to social change in the 1960s by a great American artist. Scarce. Also see Alexander Calder prints #127-128.
