Item Description
“Hon. Ruth Brian Owen” came to York, PA for a lecture and was interviewed by future newsman Harry McLaughlin while still in 11th grade. His co-written article appeared in the York High Weekly and comes with the following two items. His article states Owen was mentioned as a possible candidate for nomination in the last presidential election (meaning 1936). First is her 8x11" publicity sheet that was posted to promote the event (in pencil “Student Tickets 25¢") so it suffered paper loss mostly at lower left where there is a .5x1" damage area and hole. Another small tear on right edge has archival tape repair. The text below her printed name refers to her book from 1936 “Denmark Caravan.” She signed in black ink “Cordially Yours/Ruth Brian Owen.” Reverse has additional surface paper loss but most text is readable and tells of her career as “America’s First Woman Diplomat.” She is also credited as “The First Woman Ever To Represent The ‘Old South’ in Congress” as well as first woman to serve on Foreign Affairs committee. A 2x3.5" stiff card that served as a ticket comes along. Her talk was titled “This Business Of Diplomacy.” Surface paper off blank reverse. Front is clean. From the collection of newspaper editor Harry McLaughlin and comes with Hake's COA.
