Auction #203 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1428 in auction 203
Item Description
This unlisted and first seen fascinating item is very likely from his 1864 presidential campaign. It is 2.5x3" and .25" thick. The outer edge is soft reddish/tan leather which wraps around and is glued to a cardboard reverse missing about 20% of its original black surface paper. The item's front is covered in a glass sheet. At center is 1-5/16" tall oval window with albumin photo of McClellan in uniform. Surrounding the oval is an apparent thin sheet of some unknown material in a deep ruby red color upon which are eight silver highly reflective circles that produce mirror images of whomever is looking at McClellan's photo at the center. The circles appear very slightly domed with six of them being 7/16" dia. and two smaller at the center left and right at .25" dia. The ruby red color shows around the edges of the oval as well as the edge of the eight silver mirrors but otherwise appears nearly black. An extraordinary item perhaps attempting to communicate the idea that 'Everyone' is for McClellan. Exc. except for the minor loss of surface paper on the reverse.
