Item Description
1930s. 3-5/8x14x1" cardboard box has Quaker Oats company address label on front addressed to recipient in Pittsburgh PA. Box has dust soil and is missing left side end flaps and has .75" puncture at right side end of bottom side panel. Just Good. Contains illustrated paper sleeve titled "The Wasp" with nice graphics of kids playing with glider made by Red Wing Model Airplane Company Chicago. Sleeve has some lt. creasing and is missing .5" paper at right side from being torn open. Good. Contains three balsa wood pieces including catapult, wing with text "Listen Into Gene & Glen - Jake & Lena/Jake's Glider/Quaker Oats - Quaker Crackels - Mother's Oats". Gene Carroll teamed up with Glen Rowell of Cleveland. Known as Gene & Glen they appeared in Vaudeville and on the radio, performing in Cleveland on station WTAM from 1930-1935. In 1934 NBC began broadcasting a 15-minute version of the act "Gene & Glen" including the characters of Jake and Lena which were created by Carroll. The premium is from this Chicago sponsor where they are advertising on the mailing label and printed on the glider wing. Glider has no rubber band but is o/w complete and VF. Rare.
