Item Description
c.1960s. 5x7" glossy has wonderful image of Cole drumming with bold ballpoint pen signature at upper left “To Harry McLaughlin Most Sincerely Your Friend “Cozy Cole”. Photo has a few minor creases at upper right just visible in reflective light, otherwise Exc. Next is 8.5x11" handwritten letter in blue ballpoint pen dated “10-28-67" to Harry McLaughlin Harrisburg Patriot News York Bureau. Cole apologizes for being a bad letter writer and thanks McLaughlin for his wonderful interview and mentions traveling to quite a few places including New York, Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, etc. Letter ends “Here’s Wishing You And Your Family The Best Until We See Each Other Again, Most Sincerely, Cozy Cole”. Letter has several horizontal folds through center as mailed and has some creasing with a few tiny tears at extreme bottom edge. Near Fine appearance. Third item is 4.75x6" printed Christmas card boldly signed on inside in blue ballpoint pen “ ‘Cozy’ Cole”. Card is Exc. Cozy Cole (1909-1981) began performing in 1928 and his first recordings were made with Jelly Roll Morton in 1930. He backed vocalists including Billie Holiday and made records with Bunny Berigan and Lionel Hampton. He played with Cab Calloway in 1940 and led several all-star groups on the Keynote and Savoy labels in 1944. He had a huge hit in 1958 with “Topsy” Part 1 and 2.
