Item Description
Captain Action was initially a doll created in 1966 by the Ideal Toy Company. The doll came into being as a direct response to the incredible success that Hasbro was having with G. I. Joe. While G.I. Joe was obviously based on the concept of war and could jump between the four branches of the military, the idea behind Captain Action went another route. During the time that Captain Action came into being, the Batman TV show was becoming popular. Through a change of costume, the Captain could become any one of a number of already existing superheroes. This gave the Captain an unlimited number of roles to play. The first year of the toy’s release, he could change into nine different heroes. These heroes came from several different sources including both Marvel and DC. The comic did not appear until two years after the doll’s introduction. Production on the doll was halted shortly afterwards. Still, the comic is very fondly remembered and sought out by collectors for the incredible art of Gil Kane. This issue’s cover is by Kane and Dick Giordano. It is as dramatic and as effective as any cover he ever did for Green Lantern. Kane’s ability to create such a complete environment in a single panel is one of the reasons that he is regarded so highly by everyone. The interior art is by Kane and Wally Wood. The story is also by Kane. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified 9.2 (NM-)
