Item Description
This issue marks the first appearance of the Vault Keeper and the Crypt Keeper. In addition, Graham Ingels becomes the primary artist for the Old Witch. When the Senate began investigating comics, this is one of the titles they were looking for. Johnny Craig’s gruesomely beautiful cover made their search a bit easier. The image of a rotting corpse breaking through its cement encasement in the basement is striking and terrifying at the same time. When this image is combined with the statement by the man descending the stairs, an entire world of horror opens up. The book contains the following stories: Room for One More, The Basket, Horror in the Schoolroom, and The Howling Banshee. There is also a letter page titled The Old Witch’s Niche and a text piece, The Damaged Goddess. The issue features art by Graham Ingels, Jack Kamen and Jack Davis. This copy was taken directly from the files of the publisher of EC Comics, William M. Gaines. As a file copy, it never saw the regular route of distribution. It sat in a vault for years until Gaines decided to sell his personal collection. The pages are off-white to white. The book is CGC-certified 9.8 (NM/MT). This copy is tied with three others as the highest graded copy they have seen.
