Item Description
This item is from Al Smith's earliest political campaign in 1915. He won the office of sheriff and was a leader of the Progressive movement in New York City. In 1917 he then ran for the office President of Board of Aldermen of City of New York. This 1915 item consists of a 1.75" button showing a black star on cream background. Celluloid has slight yellowish tone to it but the small gray mark at top and far right edges was largely dust now removed. Reverse holds backpaper from "National Equipment Co." The spring pin holds a fabric ribbon which is separating somewhat just below the button's edge on both sides although still holding intact. There is a second split at the very bottom about .25" up from the end and this is 80% split but again holding fast. The central area of the ribbon remains in nice condition although with a few ripples in the fabric. Text reads in full "Tammany Hall./Smith For Sheriff/Swann For District Attorney/And/Victory." A very rare, very limited issue.
