Item Description
As a man sinks hopelessly into an unidentified quagmire, the helpless townspeople look on in amazement, powerless to help him. However, since this is an EC comic book, it is entirely possible that they chased the victim into the evil bog because he had committed a crime. The cover by Johnny Craig first appears to be very specific, but further examination reveals a certain amount of ambiguity. With so many of the townspeople looking on instead of running, both scenarios are possible. Craig packs a lot of detail into this rural scene. The stories in this issue include: Silver Threads among the Mold, People who live in Brass Hearses, Strictly From Hunger, and the second Grimm Fairy Tale that EC ever published. There is also a text piece titled Treasure! and an EC Letter page titled The Vault-Keeper’s Corner. Artists who worked on this issue include Johnny Craig, Al Davis Graham Ingels, and George Evans. This copy was taken directly from the files of the publisher of EC Comics, William M. Gaines. As a file copy, it never saw the regular route of distribution; it sat in a vault for years until Gaines decided to sell his personal collection. The pages are off-white to white. The book is CG-certified 9.4 (NM). This copy is tied with two others as the third highest certified copy they have seen.
