Item Description
1.5" paper circle pictures and reads "Welcome Wiley Post." This paper has a somewhat gummed surface on the reverse and it was once fastened to the 1.75" button showing a foamy beer mug surrounded by text "We Want Beer." On the reverse a spring pin holds the 3" ribbon which reads "Welcome Home Our Hero" but mistakenly shows image of Lindbergh's famous 1927 airplane and the image is marked as such with the name "Spirit/St. Louis" on its side. It seems the NYC button manufacturers were totally unprepared for the celebration following the flight of Post and his navigator Harold Gatty who flew around the world in eight days between June 23, 1931 and their return to NY July 1, having traveled 15,474 miles. The paper showing Post has a little surface paper off its reverse but remains totally clean. The celluloid button has a raised hairline across the left side of the beer mug but the button is totally clean and glossy. The ribbon remains in NM condition. Our consignor acquired only two examples of this and for an example with the Post paper still mounted to the button see item #668.
