Item Description
5/8" with outstanding graphic design of a hand holding the torch of liberty. Backpaper reads "Made For The Masses" with an address on Nassau Street in New York and tiny initials of the maker "W&H Co." The Masses magazine (1911-1917) issued this button during the greatest popularity of the Socialist movement in America. They published articles by famous writers such as Jack London, Upton Sinclair and Sherwood Anderson as well as featuring contemporary artists such as John Sloan and Hugo Gellert. Their editorial stance strongly apposed U.S. entry into WWI and this lead the government in 1917 to deny their use of 2nd class postage rates and later the government indited the editor for "Obstructing Enlistment" into the military. Essentially Mint and about the second we've seen in 45 years.
