Item Description
Savio's role in the turbulent 1960's began Oct. 1, 1964 when Berkeley campus police attempted to shut down a table in support of the Congress of Racial Equality. Police put the former student Jack Weinberg who had been manning the table into a police car when someone in the crowd yelled "Sit Down." Savio along with others began a 32 hour sit-in during which Savio took off his shoes and climbed on top of the car and spoke to the crowd in words that coalesced their opposition to the police. A short-term understanding was eventually made with President Clark Kerr at which point Mario instructed the crowd "I Ask You To Rise Quietly And With Dignity, And Go Home." The crowd did what he said and after that he became a prominent leader of the newly formed Free Speech Movement. This particular button is from a time in 1967 when he briefly went to jail and reads "We Support Mario." It is 2.5" and was acquired on Telegraph Avenue from a street vendor. Light general wear in reflected light but displays Exc. The only example we've seen.
