Item Description
2-3/8x3-7/8" consisting of four celluloid sheets held together by a grommet at one end which allow them to swivel individually. First as an outstanding and early example of printing on celluloid this piece is by "Baldwin & Gleason Co. Ld. N.Y." with their name in tiny text beneath the harbor scene along with the inscription "Pat. 1886." This is the earliest patent date we have ever seen on a celluloid object. While that company began printing on celluloid that early this particular item is from 1892 as one of the interior sheets contains a complete calendar for that year. The other interior sheet is blank on both sides and can be written on with pencil though this was never done. The exterior covers promote the "Canadian Club Whisky" product "Distilled And Bottled By Hiram Walker & Sons, Limited Walkerville, Ontario, Canada." One cover shows illustration demonstrating "Our System Of Maturing In Wood. Warehouses Warmed By Steam During Cold Seasons." Text above specifies "Storage Capacity 4,250,000. Gallons." Additional text attests to the age and high qualities of the product. The back cover of this cello tablet is titled "Distillery And Warehouses. Walkerville, Ontario. Canada." Superb condition, essentially Mint as made. A rarity in terms of its advertising and even more so in terms of celluloid as an early material for advertising specialty items.
