Item Description
The Brockton Fair, held in the famous shoe manufacturing Massachusetts City was the site of much early aviation history. In 1905 at the fair Roy Knabensheu (see previous item) attempted a dirigible flight although he nearly lost his life when his engine choked and the airship snagged on an iron flagpole attached to a cattle barn. He did make successful flights in 1906 and 1907 but by 1910 airplanes became the rage rather than dirigibles. This button was issued for the 1914 fair. The 1.25" shows three flying airplanes with 5" gold text on purple ribbon below reading "Souvenir Brockton Fair Sept. 29-Oct. 2, 1914." A small silver wire at the bottom of the ribbon holds a 3-dimensional white metal shoe charm symbolic of the city's primary industry. Purple ribbon has a single near invisible pinhole but otherwise the entire piece is NM, displaying Mint. The only example we've seen complete with its original ribbon. Rare.
