Item Description
This item was apparently assembled quickly by some New York City badge maker in 1931 for the celebration following the flight around the world in eight days made by Post and his navigator Harold Gatty which took place between June 23, 1931 when they left Roosevelt Field, NY and returned on July 1, having traveled 15,474 miles. There was a celebratory banquet held six days later on July 7 at the Hotel Astor. Quite possibly this piece was constructed for that event. The 3" rwb ribbon with gold printing reads "Welcome Home Our Hero" but pictures airplane clearly identified as "Spirit/St. Louis" for the famous Lindbergh flight four years earlier. The ribbon has two very tiny holes that show little. In addition the 1.75" celluloid button has the applied paper sticker reading "Welcome Wiley Post." An example of this piece with the sticker removed is offered as our item #432 and shows the underneath button as picturing a beer mug with the slogan "We Want Beer." This and item #432 are the only example we've seen of this piece. This example is totally clean although the celluloid has been very slightly flattened. Displays NM.
