Item Description
Reverse has both barpin and foldout cardboard easel which is unpunched. There is also a 1" paper sticker by the NY maker Emress. While relatively common as a 1.25" button this 6" version is the only example we have seen. It reads in addition "The New Frontier (reference to John Kennedy) Man Of The Year." It honors Glenn as the fifth person in space and the first American to orbit Earth issued for the celebration following his flight aboard Friendship 7 on Feb. 20, 1962. His ticker tape parade, for which this button was likely produced, was reminiscent of Lindbergh's and his fame and political attributes were noted by the Kennedys, with him becoming a personal friend of the Kennedy family and a symbol for the "New Frontier." White background has couple of scattered black marks which are all in the printing as made. Some exceedingly minor surface wear shows only in reflected light. Exc. and displaying Mint as made. Rare.
