Item Description
1.25" with backpaper of Montreal maker T.P. Tansey. Button has text quoted in the title as well as "Erected By The A.O.H. Of America August 15, 1909." Pictured is a large cross inscribed "R.I.P." on the base and below this "Grosse Isle/Canada." The button recalls the Famine migration which brought close to one hundred thousand immigrants to British North America in 1847. A typhus epidemic required quarantine and thousands died. For Irish Catholics in Montreal, the focal point of remembrance became this monument marking the site of reputed burial grounds adjacent to the fever sheds in Pointe Saint-Charles. Couple of faint black marks near the top of the monument design are in the printing as made. An historic and rare button. Only example we've seen.
