Item Description
4.25" tall with brass bar holding blank inserted card but likely the piece was designated for an official of the event or a dignitary. Slightly tanned rwb ribbon has loop suspending 1.5" beautifully colored and designed celluloid showing racing hydroplanes with pair of criss-crossed pennants and in the background is U.S. Capitol. The piece is dated for "Sept. 18-19, 1931." Most of the President's Cup races were contested on the Potomac River. The race was for Unlimited hydroplanes and the races took place between 1926 and 1977 with a brief time out for WWII. William A. Rogers is considered to be the "Father" of the event and he persuaded President Calvin Coolidge to sponsor the trophy. The award trophy was traditionally presented to the winner by the nation's Chief Executive. FDR showed the most interest in the race. The first multiple winner of the races and the winner of this 1931 event was a hydroplane named El Lagarto, 'The Leaping Lizard of Lake George' (New York), which triumphed in 1931, 1933, and 1934 with owner George Reis at the wheel. This 1931 race was marred by an accident to John Shibe's Miss Philadelphia which flipped upside down killing the driver Bill Frietag. He was knocked unconscious and drowned. This was the race's first, but not the last fatality. Very limited issue and only example we've seen from any event under this name. See following related Regatta button. Morry Greener Collection.
