Item Description
1.25" button with 1897 W&H paper. Top curl names issuer "High Admiral Cigarette" and button top front reads "Don't Bother Me." In the Paul Muchinsky "Boxing Pin-Back Buttons" book listed as #14 and he notes that John L. Sullivan refused to fight Jackson ostensibly because of Jackson's race. Because of his race, Jackson was never allowed to fight for a world championship title. The button's caption likely refers to Jackson's exclusion from participation in the title quest. Cream colored background has many small gray marks but the photographic image area remains without stain and the button has its high gloss. This is the first button ever to depict an African American boxer. The button is a mate to another give-away from the same company picturing boxer Fitzsimmons with text "Am I In It."
